Class 8- February 4, 2011

Today's class started with talking about the blog and my classmates asking questions about the blog. The responses to the questions for each chapter should be better explained in the blog then when you post them in the forum. The answers to the questions should be synthesis in the blog and there should only be a brief answer to the questions when putting the answers to the questions in the forum. A question was asked: how often do we have to post the blog? and the answer was you can post at the end of the week. There should be a post for each of the classes activities on the blog. After we (the class) finished talking and asking questions about the blog.

We (the class) continued class with discussing about what is due for grading for this week that pasted so Week 3. Due for grading is: (1) start blog, (2) completed observation activity and summary, (3) 4th grade test (individually) and its analysis (in groups) (4) A1 (scientific me), A2 (blog), (5) posted forum reflections on read week 1&2 chapters, and (6) created an e-folio pbworks.

After discussing about what needs to be submitted for grading, we talked about the moon observations that are suppose to start today February 4, 2011. We (the class) talked about what needs to be included for the moon observations. The moon observations should include a description of the moon and draw a picture. The moon observations can be recorded in a word document for now. But the moon observations are going to be put on the Moon Observation page under you e-folio pbwork account for this class as a part of your electronic portfolio. Dr. Smirnova does not want a paper journal or copy of our moon observations. I think Sandra asked about putting our moon observations on our blogs and Dr. Smirnova said that if you want to you can start a new blog for your moon observations.

After talking about the moon observation assignment and what we (the class) have to do, the class talked about what assignments are due for the end of next week. The interview of a scientist with a partner is due next week. The magazine or science-in-the-news article and review are due by February 9, 2011 on module.

One of my classmates asked about field work for this class right after we discussed what is due for next week. Dr. Smirnova said that for this class we are doing fieldwork in April during class time. The Science Methods class requires 8 hours of embedded fieldwork. The field work will be MW and TH. The fieldwork has not been finalized yet.

After taking about the fieldwork for the class, we talked for the rest of the class about Bloom's taxonomy. Dr. Smirnova asked if anyone read the Bloom's taxonomy powerpoint and I raised my hand. Dr. Smirnova picked Nicole Setter to go over the Bloom's powerpoint. We started with one of the slides in the whole powerpoint called Quote of the Day. This quote was "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited." Nicole asked the class what that means and some of my classmates raised their hands. The quote focuses on the concept of prior knowledge. Nicole talked about her Networking class and how she was just memorizing terms for a quiz and even though she did well on the quiz. She still did not understand what was going on in the class. The professor of the Networking class said that the class is about memorizing terms. Nicole spent an hour and a half with her professor asking him to try to explain the information and she still does not understand it. Sandra said to Nicole that the class does get easier because the first part of knowledge learned now is then used for the second part of knowledge learned and then by the end of the course you should understand. Nicole said good. The next slide was on the Overview of the Bloom's taxonomy. Then we moved onto the next slide is called Productive Pedagogies. Dr. Smirnova told us (the class) what pedagogies means. Pedagogies are the art and science of teaching. We also talked about lower-order vs. high-order. High-order is learning that we can apply. The class then talked about the slide on the original and new terms for Bloom's taxonomy. We (the class) talked about what are the changes between the original and new terms. The new terms are verbs and the original terms were nouns. The original terms had evaluation at the top and the new terms have creating and then evaluating. Dr. Smirnova let use look at the terms and then a pushed a button on the remote and the words were gone. She had Nicole ask each table to tell the order of Bloom's revised taxonomy from bottom to top starting with: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. We talked about activate and passive recipient. Passive is students go through the motions while activate is go through motions in a moving way or more quickly. These are all the slides we got through.

 Then class ended.

As a teacher it is important to go over assignments. As a teacher I think it is a good idea to have a weekly assignment sheet of all the assignments due that week and I think it is a good idea so that both parents and students know what is due for that week. This assignment sheet will begin every Monday and go to Friday.  As a teacher it is important for students to be told what is due and what days it is due. I would as a teacher give a week by week what is due handed out each Monday. This weekly assignment sheet will be handed out Monday and will tell all the assignments that are due for that week from Monday to Friday.

It is important to go over key terms at the beginning of the lesson. If reading a story it is a good idea to start the lesson by going over the key terms and vocab words. It is important to go over readings that were assigned so that you as the teacher see if your students read the chapter. Key terms are important for students to know in order to understand the lesson. Readings are another way for students to understand the lesson in more detail. Readings in the textbook are a way for students to have prior information before being introduced to the lesson. Key terms are important for students to know and are important for teachers to teach. Key terms are words that students should know to understand the lesson and unit. Before reading a short story it is a good idea to go over the key terms and to also ask the student what the students think the key terms mean. It is also a good idea to ask the students questions about the readings for each section of the chapter when teaching a lesson on each of these sections. It is always good to start with questions you as a teacher made up based on the readings that the students were suppose to do for each of the lessons to engage the students in what the lesson is about.
