Class 14- February 18, 2011

Before class:

In class today one of my friends in the class is doing her mircroteaching. My friend Kira did her mircroteaching on Wednesday but today my friend Katharine is doing her mircroteaching. I look forward to seeing it.

The class started with a former student of  Dr. Smirnova  came to the class. This student is from a class Dr. Smirnova taught last semester called ED 2601 Methods of Teaching. Her name is Lauren Brunetti. She talked about her experience in Dr. Smirnova class. She showed us (the class) her electronic portfolio and talked about her blog. Her suggestions for the blog is to find a topic on something and her example was fossils and find Youtube videos on fossils and put on blog. Lauren said that it is important to have Youtube videos on your blog. It is important to go above and beyond for your blog. The blog is not just for this class it is also for your future. Whatever you learn from this class you will take with you when you start teaching so think of things for this class and yourself but also think of ideas for the future. The blog is  not just for yourself  but also for your future because you can use the blog ideas in your future teaching. You should have science videos from Youtube. It is important to show the importance of science in your blog and why that topic is important to you. Lauren said that Dr.Smirnova is always on gmail and will get back to you as soon as possible if you send her a message on Google docs or even through Google Talk. It is always good to have a buddy in the class. It is important to have a buddy in the class. Lauren said that it is important to make relationships and friendships in the class even though we (the class and my classmates) will be competing with each other when we get out of here (college) the Mount. Some advice that Lauren gave are as follows: stay on top of module, always ask questions and voice your concerns. Dr. Smirnova is flexible with due dates if you talk to her.

She was worried that her dad would not pay for college but once he saw all the hard work and that the electronic portfolio and technology that you learn will help the her get a job he was more confident and willing to pay the tuition.   Lauren talked about how proud her dad is of her and her electronic portfolio and how her dad has shown her electric portfolio to all of dad's sisters. Lauren transfered form Orange County or OC Community College and last semester was her first semester at the Mount. She was worried that her dad would not pay for college but once he saw all the hard work and that the electronic portfolio and technology that you learn will help the her get a job he was more confident and willing to pay the tuition.   She was nervous and scared and has been in my shoes last semester when a boy gave a speech about Dr. Smirnova and his class experience with Dr.Smirnova and gave his email to say if you have any questions to email him. Lauren said I wrote down the email just in case. Lauren said that Dr. Smirnova will help with any technology and that you will learn a lot about technology from her.

Lauren told us a story about her cousin Michelle. Lauren said that Michelle was teaching a lesson at a school. She said that the classroom teacher who is good friends with her cousin froze when the vice principal came into  the classroom. The classroom teacher was nervous for Michelle but Michelle was confident and took charge with the Smart Board and teaching the lesson and the vice principal was impressed by Michelle's performance.

We (the class) gave Lauren fireworks when she was done with her presentation and she told Dr.Smirnova that she would email Dr. Smirnova her electronic portfolio which has the link the link for her  blog. Some    some people asked her questions like what she did for her blog? what did you include in your blog? which is on her electronic portfolio that .Lauren is emailing to Dr. Smirnova. Lauren is emailing her electronic portfolio so that the whole class could see an example of an electronic portfolio. The class can also check out her blog as an example of what to do for a blog because the link is on her electronic portfolio.

I thought that it was nice of Lauren to come in the class and explain all of that stuff. It could have not been easy to do and she did a great job. I learned a lot from her presentation and I thank her for coming in because she explained a lot of useful things.

Toward the end of Lauren's presentation Katharine Tischer started to hand out the name tags to all the students in the class.  Katharine's microteaching lesson was on science corners. Katharine told us this lesson was for first graders and that we had to act like first graders. The science corners was about rocks. Katharine asked: what make rocks different? Some of the answers from the class are: textures, formed at different times, and different exploration. Science corner: is a space in the classroom to hold your science material specifically to science. Science corner: is designed to have questions to guide the students with exploration, different exploration activities.Katharine handed out the four rocks and we got to touch each rock. Each rock was different.
Rock One for me was the Red/ Brown Rock. The red rock characteristics: brown-red rock, rough in some parts but also smooth, has little indention, has crystals at top, triangle, and medium size
Rock Two for me was Sand Rock: The sand rock characteristics: has a yellowish color, rough in texture, light sand color with some red and orange, jagged, and small in size
Rock Three for me was Gray/ Brown Rock: The gray/brown rock characteristics: rough and smooth texture, mix of gray and brown, round rock, and small in size
Rock Four for me was the Rock That Fell Apart: The rock that fell apart characteristics: the inside of the rock had pebbles, in color: white, gray, and a little pink, has pores, small piece broke off, small rocks inside, large rock, has crystals, come be cement
Our table's job was to come up with questions and the other two tables jobs was predictions and observations. Some of our questions are: (1) When were they formed?, (2) Where did they come from?, and  (3) Why are smooth or some jagged (bumpy more appropriate for 1st grade)?
Someone in the class I think Clarissa asked how to explain texture to first grade. Dr. Smirnova said you could explore Google and type in how to explain texture to first grade? Texture was explained as how it feels on your hand like sandpaper.  We as a class talked about predictions: like the rocks could be used for observation or counter tops. Katharine had a powerpoint about recording your observation what makes one rock and another different from one another. This is the contain of information on the second slide the first slide had pictures of the four rocks: Does it have color? Does it have texture? Is it see through? Does it shine? Does it smell? Does it look like circle or square?

I typed my peer feedback to Katharine in the peer feedback forum.

After Katharine was done with her microteaching. Then Dr. Smirnova told us that microteaching will only be three to five minutes long but she let Katharine's lesson to continue because she liked the lesson and how everyone was engaging. We talked about what process skills are: some answers are engage, evaluate, observing, how to ask question, classify, ask question, and predicting. Then we went on to talk about the three stations for science: earth, life, and physical science. Dr. Smirnova told us that our groups would be doing stations and that she wants to have six stations and a station for each of the sciences.Dr. Smirnova said that each two groups that sit at one big table would have a science.  So Nicole told Dr. Smirnova that our group is doing buoyancy which is physical science. So groups three and four are doing and experiment in the science called  physical science. Groups five and six are doing experiments in the science called earth science. Groups one and two are doing experiments in the science called  life science. The stations are for Wednesday February 23, 2011 class.

The rock activity that Katharine demonstrated in class is a great activity to do with students from first grade to fourth grade. It is a good idea to have instructions listed on the border for what the students are suppose to do for  this activity. For this activity it would be a good idea to have a worksheet with rock 1, rock 2, etc and to write what you observed and then to answer some questions like what type of rock? It would be a good idea for when the students are done to share their rock descriptions and what the students answers were to the questions on the worksheet. The rock activity would be a hands-on activity where the teacher hands out the rocks, worksheet, and the teacher goes around the room and makes sure that the students are on the right track with the task of the activity and answering questions.
