Class 12- February 14, 2011 - Valentine's Day

In class today, Dr. Smirnova, started the class by saying Happy Valentine's Day. Today is Valentine's day.

Then we (the class) continued with our presentations of the Float, Sink, or???? Observation that we started on Friday with Group 1 or the MST Maniacs and Group 4 or the Sunflower Group .The order of presentations for today was Group 5 or the Bill Nye group went first then Group 3 my group or the  LI Butterflies went second, then Group 2 or the  Global Warming Crusaders went third, and the final group was Group 6 or the Pink Flamingos. While each group was giving their presentation the rest of the class was typing in a forum their peer feedback for each group and then posting the peer feedback when all the groups were done.

When the last group was done presenting Dr. Smirnova came to the front of the classroom and told the whole class that even though we all presented on the same topic each group had a different way of presenting the information. Some groups were more detailed then others while other groups were more general. Dr. Smirnova then went on to talk about standards. We talked about why need to know the national standards: so that everyone is on the same level and know what you are doing in each state so if you have to move states the child will know the standards for what they are being taught for that topic. After talking about the national and state standards we as a class talked about goals and objectives. The key idea is the source for your goal. Goal: Students will be able to draw conclusions with using tools. Goals should not include the words: be able to.  Goals start with Student will and can include words such as: understand, discover, appreciate, and comprehend. The performance indicator is the source for the objective. Objectives should not include words such as believe and learn are forbidden.  An example of a goal is: Given a video to observe students will...

The formal science circulum includes: condition behavior criteria. After talking about a powerpoint that Dr. Smirnova on the Smartboard and was clicking through the slides.
The first slide is titled" Making Connections: Scientific Explorations in the Students's Own Environment." The first slide features assess in the middle, and the words expand, engage, explain, and explore around the word assess. Then Dr. Smirnova talked about how there are 49 states who have standards and asked the class if we knew which state did not have standards and to look up which state does not have standards.

The second slide is titled " Science in Students' Daily Lives." The slide features: two bullet points: one bullet point says: the formal science curriculum is typically developed at the state or district level. It specifies the topics you will teach and the skills and concepts your students are expected to learn. The second bullet says: the informal science curriculum ---- the experiences you create to connect science with students' daily lives ---- also had a vital effect on their learning.  Then Dr. Smirnova asked a question: what is one way to connect science to daily lives? Some answers for the question are: field trip, go to nature, bring bugs to the classroom, and current event news.

Presentations are so important to do in the classroom. It is something different then to give the students a test or assignment. It is another way to assess students on what the students have learned. Presentations are a great way for students to show their classmates and teacher what the students have learned in a creative way.

It is also a good idea to schedule some field trips so that the students could  learn outside of the classroom. Field trips could teach students how to learn through nature and through observations and from someone other than there teacher. It is important for a teacher to explore nature and be exposed to nature. The teacher can bring in different items of nature so that students can experience things in from each season of nature and learn about the things in an environment around us.  Current events is very important for students to know. As a teacher I will have the students do a current events article each week to get to learn something that is in the news. This way that the students learn about something in the news and stay informed.
