Week 10

Week 10. Moving Beyond the Science Kit: Explorations of Electricity and Atoms
Through reading Chapter 10 science teaching stories you will understand
the notion that “hands-on” activity is sufficient for sciencelearning. Through the two stories, it becomes clear that students need not only the opportunity to manipulate materials, but also the chance to be creative, to explore their own ideas and reflect on their results—in other words, to use the materials for inquiry-based scienceinvestigations. The stories emphasize that students should be engaged in
  • Planning and making decisions about procedures
  • Forming questions
  • Seeking answers
  • Testing their ideas
  • Doing further research
  • Developing original models
The bullet points are important for teachers to know. It is important for teachers to form questions and to also get the students to formulate questions. It is also a good idea for students to seek answers and to test their ideas through an experiment. It is important for student to develop original models. It is the job of the teacher to plan and make decisions about procedures and what to do with the students. Inquiry-based lessons are good to do after doing direct instruction lessons.
